Honey calcite, also known as golden or amber calcite, is a translucent to transparent variety of the mineral calcite characterized by its warm, honey-like hues ranging from pale yellow to deep amber or golden brown. This distinctive coloration is primarily due to the presence of trace elements like iron or manganese incorporated into its crystal structure during formation. It is a calcium carbonate mineral (CaCO3) that crystallizes in the trigonal system, often forming rhombohedral or scalenohedral crystals, and exhibits a vitreous (glassy) luster when polished.

Honey calcite forms deep within the Earth's crust through geological processes involving high temperatures and pressures, commonly found in sedimentary rocks like limestone and marble, as well as in veins and cavities. The leading source of honey calcite is Mexico, though significant deposits are also found in the United States, Brazil, India, Africa, and other locations. Its formation often involves the growth of fibrous tubular cells and honey-colored crystals surrounded by white membranes, which can create a distinctive honeycomb pattern when the surface is polished.

The stone is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness rating of 3, making it suitable for carving but requiring careful handling to avoid scratches or damage from water, which can dissolve or crack it.
